19. Paperbark Tree with Elegant Branching

Paperbark Tree with Elegant Branching
35.5 cm (w) x 27 cm (h), black biro on acid-free cartridge paper.
Date produced: 14th September 2001

Drawn on-site, from just outside the grounds of Brighton Secondary School, at North Brighton. Several school buildings are indicated in the background of the drawing. I was mainly interested in the poetry I felt in the way the tree’s branches were ‘arranged’. I added cross-sectional lines to the tree’s forms, to help the expression of the forms, and I added a grid to the surface of the ground, to help the expression of its general flatness and indicate the space behind the tree. Both the cross-sectional lines and the grids are lines that are 'felt' or imagined, based on actually being at the scene, able to feel the 3-dimensional nature of the forms.
