1. Beach Bush

Beach Bush
Approx. 57 cm (w) x 38 cm (h), pastels on brown paper.

Produced on-site, from the stone wall along the Esplanade at the end of Rockingham Street, West Beach. The bush on the right of this image was probably the largest bush of this type in the local sand dune area, and it quickly became a bit of a landmark for me after moving to my new home in West Beach. This particular bush always stood out in my views of the beach from near the end of my street.

I enjoyed using this beach bush as a subject in several of my drawings and paintings. It was also one of the few elements along the beach that could extend above the horizon.

Beach Bush - Detail

I tried to use the pastels here to produce bold strokes of individual colours, in a similar manner (I had hoped) to the bold strokes that I had seen in reproductions of some of the oil paintings by Vincent van Gogh.
