2. Slow Downward Lines and Circles, During a Bus Trip

Slow Downward Lines and Circles, During a Bus Trip
36 cm (w) x 26.5 cm (h), black felt-tipped pen on cartridge paper.
Date produced: 7th July 1982

Produced during a trip home on a ‘27B’ bus between 9:50 pm and 10:14 pm, on the night of 7th July 1982. I had the idea of trying to get some interest within a series of vertical lines, by drawing them while on a moving bus, with my body moving about as the bus accelerated, decelerated, turned left, turned right and bumped along the road. I drew the lines in sequence from left to right, and then I added the circles. In a way, the drawing is also a record of the travelling movements, a little like a music recording where a groove is created in a record from the sound waves.

From an abstract composition point of view, this piece works quite well. There is good visual interest within most lines, good visual interest in the rhythms between the vertical lines, in the contrast between the round shapes and the vertical lines, and in the overall composition.
