Late Afternoon Sunlight on Our Backyard

Late Afternoon Sunlight on Our Backyard
27 cm (w) x 18 cm (h), pastels on acid-free coloured-ground ‘Canson’ paper.
Date produced: February 2008

Produced on-site using two short sessions. The important thing was to try to capture the colours and relationships. I had to work very quickly, because the light changes quickly at this time of the day. I found it to be very important to work on the yellow glow within the scene. In fact, whenever I try to produce pieces based on capturing sunshine, the yellow glow within the scene is always crucial. I always find it amazing to discover just how much yellow and orange are needed.

Looking now at the drawing, I like the quick working within it. I get a sense of the energy I felt when I saw the marvellous glow of light on our backyard. It was a ‘simple’, ‘ordinary’ scene that felt special to me, because of the marvellous glow of light on it – fleeting relationships of colour and tone.
