32 cm (w) x 16 cm (h), blue biro on bank paper. Date produced: March 1981
A potato, a tomato, four apples, some plastic bags, and five carrots. A quiet still life, drawn on a rainy day within my on-site caravan in Burnie. At the time, I was living in on-site caravans in Tasmania.
I set up the objects in relation to the lighting to show the surface undulations of the carrots. I then concentrated on trying to capture the subtle tones observed. Biro is not the most obvious choice for depicting tonal renditions. Biro's advantage as a medium is in producing lines that quickly dry and do not smudge. One can build up a range of tones using layers of hatching and layers of cross-hatching.
