My Right Hand

My Right Hand
36 cm (w) x 27 cm (h), black pen on cartridge paper.

This drawing was drawn directly from my right hand, using a special drawing technique:

My right hand was positioned and used as my model. I held the pen with my left hand and placed it's tip on a spot on the piece of drawing paper. Then, without looking at the drawing as I drew, I used my hand-eye coordination to record the shapes by concentrating on slowly 'feeling' my way around each shape with my eyes (recording with the pen in my left hand as I felt my around with my eyes).

I like the resulting lines. They contain a lot of accuracy, subtlety, and character, and have a refreshing boldness. I also like the spatial interactions resulting from the overlapping of what are effectively many individual drawings (of the parts).
