It was a wild day, with strong wind, lots of clouds coming in from the southwest, and rain squalls. The weather and the wild sea felt really lively and invigorating.

I painted this entirely on-site, at West Beach, over a single 3-hour session. I needed to tie the canvas and easel down with thin ropes and pegs driven into the beach.

I wanted to use a very direct approach in responding to the colours and movements I saw. I hoped that the wildness and vitality would come through in the painting.
