17. After Washing Up

After Washing Up
52.5 cm (w) x 36 cm (h), blue biro on cartridge paper.

Drawn directly from life, after having just completed the washing up. No, it wasn’t a record to prove that I had done it (I was living on my own at that time), but after doing the washing up I noticed that the whole scene felt quite interesting with large forms and smaller forms.

A typical domestic scene – a strange world really, full of unusual objects and spaces that we have learnt to largely overlook in the course of our daily lives.

I was keen to draw the scene as accurately as possible, and because it was quite a wide angle of view, some lines and surfaces were becoming curved (such as the front of the sink cupboard, the back of the fridge to the right, etc.).

Looking back at that drawing now, drawn about 40 years ago, I recognise 3 items that I still have and regularly use: the clear plastic measuring cup, the spaghetti strainer, and the clear plastic milk-shake shaker, more easily seen in Detail 2 (below).
