10. The Beach, in Blocks of Colour

The Beach, in Blocks of Colour
Approx. 46 cm (w) x 67 cm (h), oil paints on cotton canvas.

Produced entirely on-site, from the stone wall along the Esplanade at West Beach. Here, I was trying to capture the character of the beach scene I saw in front of me, by simplifying the scene into blocks of colour.

Throughout all of the years of doing my own paintings and drawings, I have carried out experiments into efficiently and effectively capturing the things that I have been wanting to capture. The real world is alive and changes quickly. These experiments could be seen as the most important work that I have been doing over the years - working on improving the expression of my reactions to the real world and not just producing paintings that look like other paintings by successful painters. I have noticed that these experiments tend to rely more on the colours that are captured from real life observations, and don’t usually result in photographically-detailed ‘finished’ images.
