4. Portrait of an Irish-Looking Woman

Portrait of an Irish-Looking Woman
38 cm (w) x 57 cm (h), conté on brown paper.

Drawn directly from a model. At the time, I was going to a studio in North Adelaide once a week to draw nude figures, and once a week to specifically draw portraits of models.

The models were organised by a senior member of the group. All the artists who attended (usually about 8 to 12 people) would all contribute to the cost of hiring the models. There was a good variety of faces to try to capture, and I enjoyed the challenge of getting good likenesses of the models.

I found that to get a good likeness of a model, I needed to observe very subtle relationships of the underlying structures, the sizes and the distances between the various parts of their face, and any characteristic shapes of the various parts of their face; there was a lot of analysis and concentration required.
