Grasses on the Banks of the Patawalonga

Grasses on the Banks of the Patawalonga
62 cm (w) x 45 cm (h), acrylic paints on prepared paper.
Date produced: 1988 - 1992

This was painted on-site, within a single four-hour session. I used a fairly limited palette of coloured paints to achieve the range of colours here - one yellow, two reds, two blues, black and white. This limited range of paints could create quite a wide range of final colours, with good mixing. I found it difficult using acrylic paints outside, because they dried extremely quickly. Acrylic paints also tend to darken and ‘flatten’ as they dry, which means that one has to try to compensate for those changes during the colour mixing and application. Because the paint dried rapidly, I could build up the image using layers of paint quite readily.
