Drawn on-site, at the beach near home.

We had just experienced about two weeks of continuous very hot weather. It was now overcast and cooler, with a refreshing breeze coming in from the southwest. I went down to the beach, to enjoy the coolish breeze at its best. The ‘white’ sounds of the small waves coming in reflected the refreshing experience.

This drawing is an attempt at trying to capture the relief experienced while sitting at the top of the beach, looking out over the vast stretch of water, and up into the gently flowing cloud cover. I put a region of hot orange around the main drawing, to provide a context of heat for contrasting with the main drawing. Within the main drawing, I wanted to represent a very wide angle of view (almost 180 degrees of view), so I used a ‘curved space’ perspective. I’ve given the horizon a subtle upwards curve to suggest that the dominant view is looking up towards the clouds.

I enjoyed blending the soft, subtle colours, as experienced while looking out into the real scene.
