16. Inside the Dome

Inside the Dome
73 cm (w) x 53 cm (h), pastels and charcoal on acid-free paper.
Date produced: 2005

This was drawn entirely on-site. This was started as a description of form and space, using accurately drawn boughs, coloured using an exaggerated aerial perspective. The overall tone was kept reasonably high. I was wanting to keep the drawing fairly ‘open’ and not get too bogged down with a lot of fine detail.

I tried to draw the canopy behind the mass of boughs as a simplified dome, slightly leaning towards the prevailing sunshine (north, to the left). I could sense this orientation in the real canopy.

This map and the previous photograph are provided to help you to understand and/or appreciate the drawing more. Because this drawing was drawn completely on-site, if you go to the real subject tree with this display on your mobile phone or tablet, it is possible using this map of the tree to find the real place where the drawing was produced from. If you attempt to do this, please remember that I was sitting on a camp stool to do this drawing, and the tree has changed since 2005 (but typically changed only a little).
