This is the stairway and hallway to the flat where I lived in Glenelg. The building was put up in the year 1903 or so. The wall on the very right side of the drawing is an external wall that runs along St Johns Row (an old street adjoining Moseley Square). The stairway on the right hand side of the drawing leads down one floor to a door that opens out on St Johns Row.

My friendly neighbours, Mr and Mrs Mitchell lived in the flat accessed by the obvious door drawn on the left side of the drawing, with the rectangular door mat. Mr Mitchell, "Mitch", was a retired English sailor, who enjoyed a good yarn, a good beer, and a good view over Moseley Square. Mrs Mitchell, "Carmie", was a thin little woman from Indiana, USA, with a bright, cheerful, and cheeky outlook.

The door to my flat is the one to the right of the Mitchells’ door, with an oval door mat. I lived there for four and a half years, mainly while doing my 4 year Bachelor of Education degree, and seeing the Grand Hotel replace the Pier Hotel (directly across St Johns Row) in a grotesquely noisy farce that was without any regard for those living nearby.
