18. The Bee Tree - 2nd View

The Bee Tree - 2nd View
55 cm (w) x 75 cm (h), conté and pastels on acid-free coloured-ground ‘Canson’ paper.
Date produced: July 2003

Drawn entirely on-site, on the side of Brighton Road at North Brighton.

I have done another drawing of this same tree, but from a different vantage point. This view offers a really good understanding of some of the lovely twisting in the main forms of this tree.

Like so many drawings of tree forms carried out at the time, I have used an exaggerated understanding of aerial perspective in the colouring to try to enhance the expression of the forms experienced. It is something that does work for me - I can feel the closeness or distance from the colours used. Surfaces that are close to me are coloured with a stronger orange colour in the drawing, and surfaces that are more distant are coloured with more blue. Pale blues are applied to the edges of some forms to express the air that surrounds the forms.
