Approx. 51 cm (w) x 56 cm (h), oil paints on canvas. Date produced: 1983, while living at West Beach
All of these objects are able to take me back in time somewhat. Included is my blue 3-year diary (which I destroyed many years ago now, but included entries that went back to before going to Tasmania), my red photo album, my radio (which often has songs played that take me back), the “Jack the Ripper” drawing (which was a request from some other school students, and takes me back to interesting days in the Art classes at school), my camera (which can record moments in time), my “R. D. Vanderfield” trophy (significant for my times in junior hockey, playing with my brothers and friends from school), the “Caravan Interior” drawing (from my times in Tasmania), my paint box (with stickers from Burnie, Devonport and Launceston), my “Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon” record (my first rock record, that still sounds special), and two very special letters. Really, it’s not that hard to experience time travel. Many things can take us back. And some things can take us into an imagined future. Our brains, memory and whole emotional sphere are amazingly powerful things, capable of doing some remarkable things. I really enjoyed the simplicity and ‘directness’ of this painting. It took a little while to think through the ideas behind the painting and compose the objects , but not very long to actually paint it. This was a nice balance of construction.
