After being involved in producing a number of highly controlled paintings, I felt the need to do something much more open and impulsive. This is the first result I achieved. It felt good to free my arms, my shoulders, and my expectations. I hadn’t produced this type of work for some time. Producing this image manually, using a reasonably large sheet of board felt rather therapeutic, as if the sweeping actions involved were releasing tensions and the whole thing was connecting spontaneously with my emotions. I also see this image as saying something like, “I am alive!”.
