Moreton Bay Fig Tree 4

Anaglyph 3D photograph requiring glasses with a red filter over the left eye, and a cyan filter over the right eye. Taken in 2005.

This photograph gives a good indication of how far out some of the exposed buttress roots extended from this tree. It also gives a sense of how heavy and strong the boughs were, many growing out virtually horizontally and holding up tons of weight in thick timber, smaller branches, leaves and fruit.

This 3D photograph was constructed from 2 photographs taken using a digital SLR camera from my specially constructed tripod adapter for sliding between left and right eye positions. This photograph was taken as part of my Microcosm project (shown in Gallery 3).

Detail 1:

The high exposed buttress roots act as wind breaks and collect piles of leaves that have blown in on the wind. Shown amongst the leaves here are some Oak Tree leaves, collected from a nearby tree. These piles of leaves break down with the help of insects and small microbes to release valuable nutrients that can be absorbed by the tree’s roots.

Detail 2:

I was very happy with how these close structures of leaves were captured.
