24. Self Portrait

Self Portrait
29.5 cm (w) x 39.5 cm (h), conté on cartridge paper.
Date produced: 1989 - 1990

Drawn directly from life, in a mirror. With this drawing, I was trying for both a good likeness and a good sense of form, especially around the eyes. I set up the mirror to give a view from slightly above, to enhance the mapping of the facial features around the round form of my head.

The drawing was completed in a single four-hour session at night in my old flat at Glenelg.

I am presenting this drawing as both a good representation of me, the person behind these pages, and also a good indication of my technical abilities in recording observations. Most ‘draughtspeople’ know that accurately drawn portraits demand extremely high orders of analysis and discipline.

The drawing is how I see myself in a mirror, but this is the reverse (left to right, etc.) of how other people see me, so here is a reversed image of my drawing. It will hopefully feel more accurate to those who are used to seeing me.
