Reclining Nude from the Back

Reclining Nude from the Back
49 cm x 35 cm, conté on cartridge paper.
Date produced: 1989
Price: $590

I am very happy with this result. Highlight areas for me were the forms within the shoulder region, the lighting across her lower back and buttocks, and the soft flesh behind her knee.

Towards the Hills

Towards the Hills
84 cm x 61 cm, oil on linen canvas.
Date produced: 1984-1986
Price: $790

I enjoy open areas of wild grasses, wild flowers and birds, especially in the sun with free breezes - lovely freedom and life, everywhere.

I produced this painting between about 2 pm and 3 pm in the afternoon, over a period of about one and a half months in early Spring. The colours in the painting are a little dark, because the canvas was in full sunlight when I painted it. I have since learnt to keep my canvases (while working on them) in the shade, for better control of tones for the expression of bright light. More information...

The Bridge, Flinders Forest

The Bridge, Flinders Forest
55 cm x 75 cm, conté and pastel on Canson paper.
Date produced: March 2001
Price: $1090

Drawn on-site, in the Flinders pine forest, near the footbridge: it was the 3-dimensional structure and the imposing band of the footbridge that were the main reasons for this drawing. I’ve used an exaggerated aerial perspective within the colouring, to help express the forms, structures, and hopefully even the ‘breathing’ air around everything.

Weeping Myrtle 2

Weeping Myrtle 2
38.5 cm x 55 cm, conté and pastel on Canson paper.
Date produced: February 2001
Price: $920

Produced on-site in Repton Road, Somerton Park. I produced this drawing during about ten sessions in the mornings of very hot days in summer. I had a very nice spot to draw from, in the shade of the tree itself.

I wanted to accurately define the lovely flowing structures of the tree, and use accurately observed colouring for the whole image. I am pleased with the image’s sense of sunlight and presence, and with the depiction of the forms within the tree’s trunk and main branching. More information...

The Sugar-Loaf

The Sugar-Loaf
74 cm x 54 cm, conté and pastels on acid-free coloured-ground ‘Canson’ paper.
Date produced: September 2003
Price: $1,350

A flock of pigeons flicker softly above the sugar loaf, a whitish conical formation of limestone and clays on the right hand side of this drawing. The sunlit grasses on the slope just in front of me wave and bob in the cool breeze coming up from the sea behind me.

This is a small section of the Hallett Cove Conservation Park, a section of maintained native coastline environment just south of Adelaide. It's a great place to go to to get fresh air, and a good dose of nature.

Small Tree with a Metallic Sheen

Small Tree with a Metallic Sheen
54 cm x 74 cm, conté and pastels on acid-free coloured-ground ‘Canson’ paper.
Date produced: November 2004
Price: $1,390

This magnificent little tree, providing an easily accessible spectacle of colour, lustre and form, like so many other trees, gets taken for granted as people walk past it along the footpath. I was surprised by the number of people who walked past my drawing and said something to the effect of "wow" about my drawing, seemingly without realising that the tree (right there in front of them) was even more "wow" - it was alive and real, moving in the free air, with insects moving over it and about within its foliage, with dynamic lighting effects, and could be enjoyed from all around in 3-dimensional space. From the Foot-bridge Through Flinders Forest

From the Foot-bridge Through Flinders Forest
75 cm x 55 cm, conté and pastels on acid-free coloured-ground ‘Canson’ paper.
Date produced: May 2002
Price: $4,890

Drawn partly on-site in the pine forest within the Flinders University of South Australia, and partly within my studio at home. This drawing was developed fairly directly from an earlier drawing, “Floating Across Flinders Forest”. A more complete explanation of its development can be found within the Documented Development of a Major Drawing section.

Form and Space – The Sugar-Berry Tree

Form and Space – The Sugar-Berry Tree
55 cm x 75 cm, conté and pastel on Canson paper.
Date produced: May 2002.
Price: $9,800

Drawn entirely on-site, at the Botanical Gardens in Adelaide. This magnificent tree has so many interesting structures that I had to try my skills at trying to capture some of them.

This drawing went through considerable development and was entered in the 2002 Dobell Art Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
